Prescription rules in this region
In the Philippines, pharmacy chains such as Watsons list combined pills as prescription-required. In Singapore, birth control pills are prescription-only and must be HSA-approved. In Indonesia, Diane 35 is classified by BPOM as requiring a doctor’s prescription; the most widely used local brand is Andalan.
Moving or traveling? How to find your pill’s equivalent
Brand names change at borders; the medicine inside usually doesn’t. To find your pill in another country:
- Read the generic names off your pack — the estrogen (usually ethinylestradiol, “EE”) with its microgram dose, and the progestin with its dose. This pairing, not the brand, is your pill’s identity.
- Find that formulation row in the tables above, then read across to your destination country.
- Show a pharmacist the generic names, not the brand. “Ethinylestradiol 20 mcg + desogestrel 150 mcg” is understood everywhere; a US generic’s brand name usually isn’t.
Worked example: Kariva, a common US 28-day generic, contains EE 20 mcg + desogestrel 150 mcg in its active phase. In Germany the matching formulation in the table above is Mercilon. One honest caveat: Kariva’s 28-day pack ends with a few low-dose estrogen-only tablets, while Mercilon is a 21-day pack with a 7-day break — the active pills match, the pack rhythm doesn’t. That difference is exactly the kind of thing to confirm with the pharmacist rather than assume.
A prescription from home is not automatically valid abroad — in most countries you’ll need a local prescription, though pharmacy rules vary (see the Rx/OTC notes in the tables above).
Key insights by country
Japan
All oral contraceptives require a prescription (~3,000 yen/month, not insurance-covered for contraception). Japan has the most limited selection -- no gestodene, cyproterone acetate, or norgestimate pills. Japan approved its first progestin-only pill (Slinda) in June 2025.
China
Only about 5 brands are widely available, all OTC: Yasmin (优思明), Yaz (优思悦), Diane-35 (达英-35), Marvelon (妈富隆), and Mercilon (美欣乐). No progestin-only pills. Available at pharmacies and delivery apps like Meituan.
Hong Kong
Most pills are available OTC at Watsons and Mannings. Broader selection than China or Japan, including gestodene pills (Harmonet). About 20 registered brands.
Thailand
The widest variety and lowest cost of any country studied. All pills are OTC, including gestodene pills, Cerazette, and local brands like AnNa. Prices range from 60-300 baht (~$2-10/month).
Vietnam
No prescription required. Major international brands (Yaz, Marvelon, Mercilon, Diane-35) are available alongside local brands like Embevin 28. International brands can be harder to find outside major cities.
Europe (Germany, UK, France)
All pills require a prescription. Each country has its own brand names -- Yasmin is called Jasmine in France, Petibelle in Germany. The UK recently made desogestrel POPs available OTC (Hana, Lovima). Gestodene pills are widely available across Europe but not in the US.
Korea
2nd and 3rd generation pills are available OTC (일반의약품), while 4th generation pills like Yaz and Yasmin require a prescription (전문의약품). See the pill hormone comparison guide for a detailed Korean market breakdown.
